HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen11: 8TB of DDR5, 64 Cores and Eight PCIe Gen5 Slots in 2U

September 22, 2026

01 The Short Version

A 2U server refresh is rarely decided by peak throughput. It is decided by what the chassis has to absorb over its service life: how much memory the database will want in year four, how many drive bays an unplanned dataset will need, and whether a workload that did not exist at purchase time can still be hosted in the same rack unit.

The HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen11 is built to keep those answers open. Thirty-two DIMM slots, up to eight PCIe Gen5 slots and five different front-bay configurations all fit inside one 2U envelope — which means the platform is configured once and extended, rather than replaced when the first limit is reached.

02 The Defining Numbers

Eight terabytes of DDR5 across 32 DIMM slots — 16 per processor, eight channels per processor, at speeds up to 5600 MT/s on 5th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors. Up to 64 cores per socket. Up to eight PCIe Gen5 full-height, full-length slots, plus two OCP 3.0 mezzanine slots. And up to 20 EDSFF drives where flash density matters more than spindles.

None of those is a benchmark figure. Each one decides whether a workload can be added later without buying a new chassis.

03 What It Replaces

The server this replaces is usually a two-socket platform whose limits were fixed at purchase: DDR4 memory at capacities a current database no longer fits into, PCIe Gen3 slots that cap what a modern network adapter can deliver, and a drive cage that cannot take NVMe without compromise.

Those limits are invisible on day one. They surface later as the second server bought because the first ran out of DIMM slots, and the separate storage tier bought because the front cage could not be re-populated.

04 Design and Redundancy

The redundancy is concentrated where a rack server actually fails: power, cooling and management.

Power runs through HPE Flex Slot supplies in 1+1 redundant configurations at 800W, 1000W or 1600W, in Platinum or Titanium efficiency, with a -48VDC option for telco environments. Six standard fans carry airflow across the chassis, and direct liquid cooling is available where air cannot carry the configured load.

Management independence is the third leg. HPE iLO 6 runs on a dedicated 1Gb port with its own front service port, separate from the production network — so remote console and firmware work does not depend on the operating system, or on the data path, being healthy.

05 Chassis and Configuration Options

One chassis, five front-bay configurations. That range is the point of the platform:

8SFF, field-upgradeable to 24SFF. 24SFF for maximum small-form-factor density. 8LFF as the cost-optimised spinning-disk option. 12LFF for bulk capacity. 12EDSFF, scaling to 20 EDSFF drives where all-flash density matters most.

Optional rear bays extend most configurations — up to six SFF at the rear — and a separate 2 × M.2 NVMe boot device can be fitted at the back, keeping the front cage available for data rather than for the operating system.

06 Interfaces and Connectivity

There is no embedded NIC. Networking arrives through an OCP 3.0 mezzanine card or a stand-up PCIe adapter, with options from 1GbE to 200GbE. The network choice is therefore made deliberately at configuration time, rather than being constrained by what is soldered to the board.

Storage control comes from HPE's MR series controllers or the SR932i-p with an 8GB wide cache across 32 lanes; Intel VROC is available for SSD-only hybrid RAID. Front I/O covers a display port and USB 3.2 Gen1; the rear adds VGA, further USB ports and the dedicated iLO port.

07 Management and Security

HPE iLO 6 handles out-of-band configuration, monitoring and firmware updates, and HPE Compute Ops Management extends that to a fleet view. Because the tooling is consistent across the ProLiant Gen11 line rather than specific to one model, a management process written for one server in the estate applies to the rest.

Security starts below the operating system. HPE Silicon Root of Trust validates firmware before it is allowed to run, addressing the class of compromise that survives an operating system reinstall.

09 What to Verify Before You Commit

Memory population: confirm the population rule for the target speed. Sixteen DIMMs per processor at 5600 MT/s is one configuration; filling all 32 slots can change the achievable speed.

Processor generation and board: 5th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors require a system board running current firmware. A 4th Gen board does not become a 5th Gen board.

Drive cage: choose the front bay configuration against the workload, not the price list. 8SFF to 24SFF is a field upgrade; LFF to EDSFF is not.

Network: with no embedded NIC, the OCP card is a required decision rather than an option.

Power and cooling: size the Flex Slot supplies against the fully populated configuration — GPU, NVMe and all DIMMs — not the as-shipped state.

10 Where This Fits

A 2U two-socket server is a long-life asset, and the DL380 Gen11 is designed to be specified once and extended rather than re-bought. The memory ceiling, the eight PCIe Gen5 slots and the five front-bay configurations are what let a platform bought for virtualisation still host container workloads or an all-flash data tier years later, in the same rack unit and on the same management plane.

With 20+ years of IT distribution experience, Qianxing Jietong supplies and integrates platforms of this class — server selection, memory and storage sizing, network and fabric design, and delivery against an agreed maintenance window.
