The Linear Tape-Open (LTO) Program Technology Provider Companies, consisting of Hewlett Packard Enterprise, IBM Corporation, and Quantum Corporation, have published their official industry shipment report. Fueled by continuous enterprise data growth, the report underscores a robust start to 2026, propelled by widespread LTO-9 adoption as well as the launch and initial capacity scaling of the upgraded LTO-10 tape cartridges.
Per the industry consortium, total shipped tape storage capacity in Q1 2026 rose 57% year-over-year versus the same quarter in 2025. This strong growth comes on the heels of an all-time industry high set in 2024, when annual tape shipments hit 176.5 exabytes, representing a 15.4% year-over-year increase. Annual shipment volume moderated slightly to 160.3 exabytes in 2025, marking a 9% annual drop, yet still remained higher than any yearly figure recorded before 2024. The launch of the 40TB native-capacity LTO-10 cartridge in early 2026 delivers an instant density upgrade solution for enterprises operating large-scale archival and secondary storage infrastructures.
Industry executives point out that rising capacity demands, data center power limitations, and growing requirements for physically air-gapped cybersecurity resilience are driving broader integration of LTO tape into modern hybrid storage architectures. The LTO format is increasingly deployed as a cost-efficient cold storage tier to complement high-cost high-density flash and disk arrays, ideal for long-term data retention and AI training datasets that demand massive ingestion capacity with no continuous power consumption.
Industry market analysis shows that despite macroeconomic and global trade challenges impacting enterprise purchasing cycles, LTO tape media sustains stable structural market demand. Featuring low operational costs, zero idle power consumption per cartridge, and a clear long-term product roadmap, LTO tape serves as an effective solution to mitigate data center power constraints. As enterprises upgrade legacy tape libraries to modern hardware, the LTO consortium projects overall 2026 shipment volumes will keep climbing toward new historical highs.
